Gold Chain
Gold Chain Calculator
Free gold chain calculator. Estimate the melt value of a gold chain or necklace by karat, weight, live spot price, and payout percentage.
Use the calculatorAbout gold chain
Gold chains are usually solid 10K, 14K, or 18K, and because they can be heavy, they often hold significant melt value. A light chain may weigh 3-10 grams, while a substantial rope or Cuban link can weigh 30 grams or more.
Watch for hollow chains and clasps: hollow links weigh less than they look, and some clasps are a different metal. Weigh the chain, choose the karat, and the calculator estimates its gold value at the live spot price.
Worked example at an illustrative gold spot of $4,000.00 per troy ounce (use the live price above for current figures):
How to calculate gold chain value
- Weigh the item. Use a digital gram or pennyweight scale. Heavier, solid pieces give the most reliable estimate.
- Select the metal and purity. Pick gold, silver, or platinum, then choose the karat or fineness. Use Custom to enter an exact percentage.
- Confirm the live spot price. The calculator fills in the current spot price automatically. Edit it if you use a different quote.
- Calculate and adjust payout. Press Calculate to see the melt value, then move the payout slider to model a buying offer.
Gold Chain Calculator questions
How much is a 14K gold chain worth?
A 15-gram 14K chain holds about $1,124.71 in melt value at a $4,000 spot (15 ? 31.1035 ? 0.583 ? $4,000). Heavier chains are worth proportionally more.
Are hollow gold chains worth less?
Yes. Hollow chains contain less gold than solid chains of the same size, so they weigh and value much lower. The calculator uses actual weight, which accounts for this.
Is the clasp the same gold as the chain?
Not always. Some clasps or spring rings are plated or a different karat. For large lots, weigh and price questionable parts separately.
What karats are gold chains usually?
Most solid gold chains are 10K, 14K, or 18K. Higher-karat 22K and 24K chains are common in some markets and hold more gold value.
