Use the calculatorAbout 14K gold
14-karat gold is the most common gold purity in U.S. jewelry. It is 14 parts gold out of 24, which works out to roughly 58.3% pure gold by weight. The rest is alloy metals like copper, silver, and zinc that add strength and color.
Because 14K is only about 58.3% gold, its melt value is a little over half of what the same weight of pure 24K gold would be worth. This calculator does the troy-ounce conversion and purity math for you using the live gold spot price.
Worked example at an illustrative gold spot of $4,000.00 per troy ounce (use the live price above for current figures):
How to calculate 14K gold value
- Weigh the item. Use a digital gram or pennyweight scale. Heavier, solid pieces give the most reliable estimate.
- Select the metal and purity. Pick gold, silver, or platinum, then choose the karat or fineness. Use Custom to enter an exact percentage.
- Confirm the live spot price. The calculator fills in the current spot price automatically. Edit it if you use a different quote.
- Calculate and adjust payout. Press Calculate to see the melt value, then move the payout slider to model a buying offer.
14K Gold Calculator questions
How much is 14K gold worth per gram?
Per-gram value depends on the live spot price. At a gold spot of $4,000 per troy ounce, one gram of 14K gold holds about $74.98 in melt value (1 gram ? 31.1035 ? 0.583 ? $4,000). Use the calculator above with the current spot price for an exact figure.
Is 14K gold 58.3% or 58.5% pure?
14K is exactly 14/24 = 58.33% gold. Some refiners round to 58.5%. The calculator defaults to 58.3% for 14K, and you can switch to Custom purity to enter your refiner's exact percentage.
Why is my 14K offer lower than the melt value?
Buyers pay a payout percentage of melt value to cover refining, risk, and margin. Use the payout slider to model an offer - for example, 80% of melt.
Does the calculator work for 14K white and rose gold?
Yes. White, yellow, and rose 14K gold are all about 58.3% pure gold - only the alloy metals differ. Use the same 14K setting for all three colors.
